698 Lagos Civil Servants to be Homeowners Through Ballot System

Lekki, Lagos – May 12, 2024

In an effort to address the housing deficit in Lagos and improve the lives of civil servants, the Lagos State government has announced a new initiative.

During a press briefing to mark the first year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, the Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, revealed that 698 civil servants will be chosen through a ballot system to become homeowners across the state’s various housing estates.

This move is aimed at promoting transparency and fairness in the allocation of government housing units. Independent observers will be present during the balloting process to ensure its credibility.

“We will henceforth, allocate some of our homes through the ballot,” Akinderu-Fatai said. “[The process] will be observed by independent observers to ensure transparency and fairness.”

The Commissioner also revealed that the Lagos State Mortgage Board has already compiled a list of eligible applicants. A total of 950 applicants have been pre-qualified for home unit allocation across various schemes.

Some of the estates where these homes are located include Idale (Badagry Division) and LagosHOM Odo-Onosa/Ayandelu (Epe Division). The balloting process is expected to begin on June 4th, 2024.

Those selected will be entitled to a 40% discount on their home’s cost spread over their service lifetime. This initiative is part of a larger effort by the Lagos State government to address the housing shortage and improve the lives of its workers.
