Lagos, Nigeria – July 27, 2024 – In a decisive move to curb the rising incidents of building collapse in the state, the Lagos State Government has revoked all existing building permits. This drastic action follows the tragic collapse of a building in Maryland, Ikeja, which claimed the lives of five workers.
Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, announced the revocation, emphasizing the need for stringent measures to ensure public safety. All ongoing construction projects must now undergo revalidation by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to continue operations.
The government has warned that failure to comply with the revalidation process will result in the immediate sealing of construction sites. Dr. Babatunde expressed deep regret over the loss of lives and stressed the government’s commitment to preventing such occurrences.
While acknowledging the government’s responsibility in regulating the building sector, the Special Adviser also blamed property owners and developers for negligence and disregard for building regulations.
This development is expected to have significant implications for the real estate sector in Lagos, as developers and builders will have to navigate the new regulatory framework to continue their projects.
