Anambra State Government has commenced the demolition of illegal structures across the state. The move, aimed at restoring order and ensuring adherence to urban planning regulations, has seen bulldozers raze down several buildings in recent weeks.
According to the Anambra State Physical Planning Board, the demolition exercise is part of the ongoing ‘Operation Show Your Building Permit.’ The Board’s Chairman, Chike Maduekwe, expressed the state government’s resolve to curb the menace of illegal constructions.
Areas affected by the demolition include Ogbo-Oroma, Onitsha, where numerous structures were brought down for contravening building laws. The exercise has also extended to other parts of the state as authorities intensify efforts to sanitize the built environment.
While the move has been met with support from some quarters for restoring sanity, others have raised concerns about the impact on livelihoods, especially for those who had invested heavily in the affected structures.
The Anambra State Government has however assured that the exercise will be carried out fairly and transparently, with adequate compensation for those who qualify.
