Disunity Derails Progress: Apo Traders Meeting with FCTA Ends in Chaos

A meeting intended to resolve the ongoing land allocation dispute between Apo traders and the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) descended into confusion on Friday. The meeting, convened by AMMC coordinator Chief Felix Obuah, was meant to address the Apo Traders Associations’ (ATAS) demands for a permanent market site.

The effort to find common ground was overshadowed by disagreements among various factions claiming to represent the traders. The tense atmosphere saw multiple unions and individuals presenting conflicting claims and accusations, nearly leading to a physical altercation.

Obuah expressed disappointment at the disunity among the traders. He emphasized the government’s stance of not dealing with unregistered organizations and refusing land allocation without a unified front. This lack of cohesion appears to be a significant hurdle in resolving the land dispute.

The meeting’s abrupt end leaves the future of the Apo traders uncertain. The traders have been agitating for a permanent location with basic infrastructure before vacating their current spots along road corridors. This is seen as an obstacle to the ongoing dual carriageway project.

Obuah urged the traders to unify and present a common platform if they wish to gain the attention of the authorities. The outcome highlights the challenges in addressing the Apo traders’ grievances. Only through a united front can they hope to reach a solution with the FCTA.
