FG Vows to Remove Illegal Structures Along Lagos Shoreline

The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified its stance against unregulated developments, threatening to demolish illegal structures on the Lagos shoreline as part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard coastal areas and ensure sustainable urban growth. This action comes amid increasing environmental concerns, such as coastal erosion and flooding, aggravated by unauthorized construction activities.

Lagos State, which is grappling with rapid urbanization and ecological vulnerabilities, has been a focal point for enforcement. In recent operations, the Lagos State Government issued contravention notices to over 280 property owners in the Eti-Osa area, demanding documentation to justify their developments. Non-compliance has led to demolition warnings and direct removals of illegal structures, such as those along the System 157 drainage path in Orchid Road, Eti-Osa.

The Federal Government is aligned with state efforts to enforce urban planning regulations, targeting structures that encroach on wetlands, drainage paths, and other sensitive areas. This crackdown aims to prevent slum development and preserve the integrity of the coastal ecosystem.
