The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the issue of unauthorized buildings across the state. Following the expiration of an amnesty window in July 2024, the government announced that it would intensify actions against property owners who have failed to secure necessary planning permits. The state had previously provided a 90-day amnesty, offering relief to property owners, including waivers on penalties and a 5% discount for those who regularized their documents promptly.
The crackdown will be spearheaded by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), which will focus on demolishing illegal structures, particularly those without approved building plans. This initiative is aimed at improving urban development and ensuring safety standards across Lagos. Areas such as Ogombo in Eti-Osa have been identified as hotspots for unapproved structures, with LASBCA officials vowing to clear these properties despite resistance from land grabbers.
Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, emphasized that the amnesty was designed to encourage compliance, but further delays would no longer be tolerated. He urged property owners to ensure proper due diligence before purchasing land or starting construction, warning that unapproved buildings compromise the state’s urban planning efforts.
This new enforcement strategy is expected to result in the demolition of numerous buildings that have continued to defy regulatory standards, helping to curb unregulated development across Lagos.
