Lagos Marks 80% of Ibeju-Lekki Buildings for Demolition, Raising Concerns

The Lagos State government’s decision to demolish 80% of buildings in Ibeju-Lekki has sparked controversy. The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development (PPUD), Oluyinka Olumide, announced that these buildings lacked proper government approval and were constructed in an area zoned for agriculture.

This move has drawn criticism on several fronts. Firstly, it raises questions about the government’s enforcement of building regulations. With such a high percentage of unauthorized structures, critics argue that relevant agencies failed to adequately monitor construction activities in Ibeju-Lekki.

Secondly, the demolitions will cause significant hardship for residents and property owners. Many may have invested heavily in these buildings, unaware of the zoning restrictions or lacking the necessary permits due to potential bureaucratic hurdles.

The situation is further complicated by the loss of building records in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area (LGA) during the #EndSARS protests. This makes it even more challenging for residents to prove they followed proper procedures.

Ibeju-Lekki, with its proximity to the Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Dangote Refinery, is a prime location for real estate investment. The demolitions could discourage future investment and development in the area.

The Lagos State government must navigate these concerns. While ensuring adherence to building regulations is crucial, it’s important to find a solution that minimizes hardship for residents and fosters responsible development in Ibeju-Lekki.
