Lagos Residents Accuse LASBCA of Collusion in Forced Evictions and Demolitions

Residents of Apapa Road in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area have accused the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) of orchestrating forced evictions and demolishing their homes despite a court order restraining such actions. This has escalated tensions in the community as the residents allege violations of their rights.

The controversy began when residents received demolition notices despite holding valid documents proving ownership of their properties. According to affected individuals, LASBCA ignored a court injunction issued earlier this year that prohibited any eviction or demolition activities pending the resolution of legal disputes.

Residents claim the agency marked their buildings for demolition multiple times, the most recent occurring just weeks ago. They allege LASBCA’s actions are in defiance of a 90-day amnesty period announced by the Lagos State Government, intended to regularize structures and address compliance issues. The amnesty is set to expire in July 2024, leaving many questioning the agency’s rush to enforce demolitions.

In response, residents have petitioned Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene. They accuse LASBCA officials of colluding with certain individuals to grab prime properties in the area under the guise of urban development. These actions have left families homeless and caused widespread distress in the community.

Urban planning and building safety have been ongoing concerns in Lagos State, with frequent reports of distressed buildings and unsafe structures. The Lagos State Government has recently promised to address these issues through meetings with developers and property owners. However, affected residents on Apapa Road argue that LASBCA’s heavy-handed approach is unjust, calling for greater transparency and adherence to legal processes.

This issue sheds light on broader challenges in balancing urban development with protecting the rights of residents. As tension rises, stakeholders are urging the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure that development does not come at the cost of displacing vulnerable communities.
