The Lagos State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to individuals and entities occupying spaces beneath high-tension power lines to dismantle and remove all unauthorized structures. This directive, announced by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), aims to uphold public safety and ensure compliance with the state’s physical planning laws.
In an official statement released on Monday, LASBCA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and properties. He stated that property owners have until January 31, 2025, to voluntarily remove any structures situated within restricted power line corridors. Failure to comply will result in enforcement actions, including demolition.
This move is part of a broader initiative to address the proliferation of illegal developments under power lines, which pose significant safety risks due to potential exposure to electromagnetic radiation and the danger of electrical hazards. The General Manager of LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, has previously warned residents about the dangers associated with building or trading under high-tension cables, urging them to relocate to safer areas.
The government has reiterated that the erection of shops, offices, and residential houses under high-tension cables is not only illegal but also endangers lives and properties. Residents are encouraged to report such violations to LASBCA to avert potential disasters.
This enforcement action underscores the Lagos State Government’s dedication to maintaining a safe and orderly environment for all residents. Property owners and occupants are urged to adhere to this directive promptly to avoid the consequences of non-compliance.
