Lagos State Intensifies Crackdown on Unauthorized Constructions on Lagos Island

In a decisive move to uphold urban planning regulations, the Lagos State Government has sealed multiple buildings under construction on Lagos Island due to the absence of necessary permits and for obstructing public infrastructure. This action underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring compliance with established building codes and maintaining environmental order.

The Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) announced the commencement of enforcement activities following the expiration of an eight-month amnesty period, which concluded on December 31, 2024. This amnesty, approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, provided property owners the opportunity to regularize their building permits without incurring penalties. With the grace period now over, LASPPPA has initiated operations to seal buildings lacking the requisite planning approvals.

In a related development, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has taken action against properties that have encroached upon public spaces. During an inspection tour led by Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab, several properties on Adeniji Adele Road were sealed for depositing building materials on public roads, thereby constituting environmental nuisances. This enforcement aims to clear obstructions that impede traffic flow and compromise public safety.

Further emphasizing its zero-tolerance policy towards illegal structures, the state government has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to traders operating under the Apongbon Bridge and along drainage setbacks on Lagos Island. These traders have been directed to vacate the areas to facilitate the removal of illegal structures obstructing drainage channels and public infrastructure. The exercise, scheduled to commence shortly, targets areas including Oke-Arin and Agbogbon Market.

The Lagos State Government’s intensified enforcement actions reflect its dedication to urban renewal and environmental sustainability. Property owners and developers are urged to adhere strictly to physical planning laws and obtain the necessary permits to avoid sanctions. These measures are essential to prevent environmental nuisances and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
