Lagos to Demolish Unapproved Buildings After Amnesty Period

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its stance on demolishing buildings constructed without proper approval. This follows the expiration of a 90-day amnesty period granted to owners to regularize their structures.

According to Mr. Olaoye Olusegun, Public Affairs Unit of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), the enforcement action is a continuation of the government’s efforts to ensure safety and proper urban planning in the city.

The amnesty period aimed to encourage owners of unapproved buildings to obtain the necessary permits and certifications. LASBCA officials highlighted the proactive measures taken during this time, including publishing a list of over 359 distressed buildings across the state. Thankfully, over 90% of these buildings were voluntarily demolished by their owners to prevent potential disasters.

The focus will now shift to identifying and demolishing unapproved structures that haven’t been regularized. The LASBCA urges citizens to adhere to building regulations and emphasizes the importance of obtaining proper approvals before construction begins. This ensures the safety of residents and adheres to urban development plans for Lagos.
